I got my first paycheck for my new job yesterday. I swear, this job pays more than I know what to do with. Now that I actually have money in the bank, I feel like a huge weight that I didn't even know was there has been lifted. I went for a walk down on the quay to look at the flowers, and the water, and the bridges in the rare sunshine, and I bought myself a mixed coffee beverage at the market. It was so liberating not being worried that the $2 drink would break the bank. In know I'm going to be able to pay off all my debts. I know I'm going to be able to afford all my meals. I know I can get all the things I've been putting off - new wheels for my skates, fixing my digital camera... I can rent movies now and buy used books. All the simple things that seemed so cheap and unimportant when I was working and could afford to live, and then some. I'm even going to be able to go to Italy in June. And not worry about it one bit.

Funny how I didn't even really know this was bothering me until it went away.

I just found out today that I am on the list to play in the first ever Terminal City Rollergirls bout!!!!! I did not think I would be good enough to play, but I'm on the list! It's not official until after March 15th, but I passed all my skills testing today, and as long as I go to all the practices next weekend, I should stay on it. Whoopee! So, to all my friends anywhere near Vancouver, you have to come and see me play May 5 at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster (that needs to be confirmed too, but mark it down just in case)!!!!

Now for the rest of the updates. I went to Abu Dhabi for a week and a half. I didn't like Abu Dhabi as much as I did Al Ain - I found Abu Dhabi to be far more americanized, while Al Ain was more traditionally arabic, but the experience was interesting nonetheless. Unfortunately, still being unemployed, I didn't have much money to spend, but my mom helped me out quite a bit. The food there is amazing, and there fresh juices are absolutely incredible. They have nothing like it in North America, that I've found. I came back with a few geeky geology souvenirs - a labradorite pendant, some glasses carved out of stone - and I also bought some proper incense, including frankincense and myrrh. I also brought back some, along with a burner, as a Valentine's gift for Mike. It's not something he'll use very often, but I know he appreciates the traditional feel of it.

Since I got back, massive renovations have been done on my apartment, and there's still more to do. I just moved back in after living in my grandmother's freezing cold basement for about a week. The place looks amazing - you wouldn't believe that it was the same apartment - but the best part about the whole experience was the opportunity to get to know my grandmother better. She has led such an interesting life. Even though she's a little crazy, she's still very interesting to talk to, and very helpful. She does so much for me, and I really don't know what to do in return.... My cat didn't help any when she ate half of one of my grandma's favourite plants... That little bitch.

Apparently it's customary on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, which is today, to write a post about why we are pro-choice. Thanks to [info]ericfaceplant for bringing this to my attention.

I don't feel like writing much on the subject, but anyone who feels that abortion is a crime ought to read the Cider House Rules by John Irving. Pro-choice reasoning that even the general population should be able to grasp. And a pretty good book.

Current Music: Frank Black - Pray For The Girls
Wicked derby weekend! Don Juan Jovi and Mad Madge (refs from the Rat City Rollergirls) came up and led our weekend practices. Friday evening was crazy intense - my legs and upper arms are still killing me, but Sunday morning was the real fun. We had a mock bout, complete with penalties, scorekeeping, regular jams and a jam clock. It was amazing. We only had time for two 20 minute periods instead of three, but that was a time constraint, not due to lack of energy. I was so happy that I could keep up with the pack, and I feel like I was actually doing a pretty good job strategy wise. Until yesterday, I wasn't really sure I could make it in an actual bout.

We took the Seattle folk out for lunch afterwards, and my team captain was saying that some of the girls were asked not to skate in the mock bout because it was felt they didn't have the necessary control. That made me feel even better, knowing that my team captain felt that I was good enough to be there, when some members of our team who had been there from the beginning weren't. And I know those girls are pretty good. The one thing I need to work on is my speed. I intend to practice that on the UAE waterfront in 2 weeks :)

Also, the Tacoma league just had their first exhibition bout a couple of weeks ago, and Mad Madge seems to think we're at about the same level as them (if not a little ahead). Tacoma is looking for an excuse to bout - there is talk of us playing them! It would be the FIRST EVER international flat track bout! I REALLY REALLY want to see that happen! I doubt I'd be part of our all-star team, but I would just love for our league to be involved in that!

Photos from Sunday (poor quality, but still cool) And yes, that is me in the first photo!

Jan. 12th, 2007 @ 11:52 pm calling all girlie girls
OK folks, the Terminal City Rollergirls are looking for new or used cosmetics, toiletries, or accessories for our beauty drive! All this stuff is to benefit the ladies of the streets in downtown Vancouver, so give generously! Now would be the perfect time to clean out your makeup kits, medicine cabinets, and wherever else you may keep your unwanted beauty aids. Guys too, if you have any soap, shampoo, whatever to donate, we'll take it (again, new or partly used). So ask your friends, ask your mom, dig deep in your bathrooms for unwanted goodies, we'll take it all!

You can get your stuff to any of the rollergirls before Valentine's day, but I may only be here until the end of the month, so if you are going to get this stuff to me, do it fast! If you need me to pick it up, I'm there!

Thank you all from the TCRG, Beauty Night, and WISH.

Jan. 12th, 2007 @ 01:14 pm Sex Show. Yahoo!
One of the fresh meat from roller derby works at a sex shop that has a booth at the Taboo Sex Show this weekend. She had this fantastic idea to have rollergirls come out and skate around handing out coupons for her booth. Totally not allowed, but fun nonetheless. I did a three hour shift last night, and it was sooo much fun! Skating around in a skimpy outfit, carrying around a giant inflatable cock - that thing was a great conversation piece. Plus, last night was media night, and SOOOOO many people took photos of me with it. I can't wait to see if there are going to be any photos of me with a giant cock in the paper :P

They had so much awesome stuff going on, and amazing deals in the booths. I picked up a new toy that I absolutely can't afford, but it was far too good a deal to pass up. There were burlesque shows, and I picked up passes to more burlesque, and to Sin City fetish night - I have been DYING to check it out.

Skating around on the carpet was really exhausting, but even then I havn't been sleeping well. I havn't had a good night's sleep since I got back from the island. It keeps me from going out and getting anything done (ie looking for a job), I just want to stay at home in bed all day. I'm better once I have my daily coffee, but these days that usually occurs around 1pm, and a lot of the day has already been lost.

dammit i need a job.

I have an interview tomorrow to work for a call center - trying to get people to come to time share presentations. It's evil, I know, but I really need work ASAP. I figure if it's shitty work, I can always find something better and quit - I wouldn't feel bad at all about leaving these people in a lurch.

And if it's REALLY bad, all the more reason for me to try really hard to get a better job.

If you feel the urge to buy me a gift, bring me booze as I can't afford my own until I get a job. See you there!

Had another date with my new flame last night - such a good time! I'm still sick, so we didn't really do more than hang out in my apartment, but I was supposed to go out for a friend's birthday and totally wound up skipping it to spend more time with him... My friend understood :) I havn't felt this good about anyone I've dated in a very long time. Unfortunately, I'm going away for the holidays and probably won't see him again until the new year. Ah well, there will be much turkey, scrabble, beer and video games to distract me in between!

I am FINALLY having my housewarming/Japanese theme party on Sat, Nov 25, 2006!!! You supply the Sake and Asahi, I'll supply the sushi and teriyaki. Prizes for best outfits! This is your chance to bring out the geisha/samurai/sumo wrestlers in you... apparently we'll even have Sailor Moon joining us. So grab your housecoat (I mean kimono), tie a scarf (I mean obi) around your waist, and make the trek out to New West. Easily accessible by public transit, I swear, plenty of parking, and I can make room for those who need to crash.

Need info or directions? email sassygunns@hotmail.com

And I'm giving you plenty of notice, so there's no excuse for not having SOME kind of outfit!

How do you feel?: sore
Current Music: Time Warp
Just got back from Vegas, and it wasn't nearly as crazy as I had anticipated. I was too broke to really do much, and all my companions were either non-drinkers or non-partiers, and none of them EVER stayed up past 1 am. In Vegas. I mean really people, if you're going to party anywhere, that's the place to do it!

I actually got craziest the night I got back to Van - I got off the plane, took the bus downtown straight to the club, checked my big travel bag, and proceeded to get extremely drunk. I'm still feeling the effects 2 days later. It kind of made up for the Vegas boredom. At least the Cirque du Soleil show was amazing - well worth the $145 I paid to see it. And the wedding was AWESOME. The dinner afterwards was amazing (especially this chocolate raspberry dessert thing - YUM!).

Also, we got to go to the biker bar Hogs and Heifers - which is the real bar the movie "Coyote Ugly" was modelled after. Except, I think the original one is in LA, and the Vegas version is just a cheap imitation, like everything else in that town. It was still an authentic dive, a definite plus after all the fake poshness in that town. And there were awesome bikes outside.
